Records are prepared and recorded by the state Dept. of Public Works (now Massachusetts Highway Department), pursuant to MGLA c 81, s 5, and by the county commissioners, pursuant to MGLA c 82, s 1, 11, to indicate takings in fee or easement and ownership, use, and restrictions upon property.

St 1919, c 350, ss 111-116 established the Dept. of Public Works, superseding the Massachusetts Highway Commission and the Commission on Waterways and Public Lands.
